Half of US warehouse operators will use robots in 2024

For more insights and key statistics on the biggest trends in today’s most disruptive industries, subscribe to our Chart of the Day newsletter.

In 2024, robots will be used by just under half of medium to large operators of warehouses and fulfillment centers in the US. That’s up slightly from 44.9% this year and significantly from 28.0% in 2019.

Beyond the chart: Amazon has more than 520,000 robotic drive units in its fulfillment and sort centers, per TechCrunch. As robots grow common in warehouses, the next frontier will be stores, where 37.5% of large US retailers will feature some sort of autonomous unit this year.

Note: Robots are defined by the International Organization for Standardization as an actuated mechanism programmable in two or more axes with a degree of autonomy moving within its environment, to perform intended tasks; includes units to perform tasks such as picking, sorting, and product transportation; excludes collaborative robotic units that only operate alongside workers.
