Additional Note: Proximity mobile payments are also known as point-of-sale (POS) mobile wallet payments and POS mobile contactless payments. This type of payment entails scanning, tapping, or swiping a mobile phone at the POS to complete a transaction and includes use of public transportation payment wallets. Examples include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, the Starbucks mobile app, and the Los Angeles Metro's mobility wallet. Purchases of digital goods on mobile phones and transactions made via tablets are excluded.
Methodology: Estimates are based on the analysis of survey and web traffic data from research firms, primary research, interviews, information from major mobile payment players, historical consumer adoption and buying trends, payment adoption trends, retail spending trends, demographic and socioeconomic factors, and macro-economic conditions.
